How to Spot Fake Products and Scam Sellers on Indian E-Commerce Sites
The Counterfeit Problem
From fake electronics with cloned serial numbers to counterfeit cosmetics with harmful chemicals, the counterfeit goods market in India is enormous. Even trusted platforms like Amazon and Flipkart have third-party sellers who slip through quality checks.
Red Flags in Product Listings
- Price too good to be true — A Rs 25,000 smartphone for Rs 8,999 is not a deal, it is a scam
- Seller with fewer than 50 ratings — New sellers with no track record are higher risk
- Stock photos only — Legitimate sellers use actual product images, not manufacturer renders
- Vague product descriptions — Missing model numbers, specs, or warranty information
- No brand authorisation — Check if the seller is listed as an authorised retailer on the brand's official website
How to Verify Authenticity
Electronics: Every genuine product has a serial number. After purchase, verify it on the manufacturer's website (Samsung, Apple, Xiaomi all have serial verification portals). If the serial is invalid or already registered to someone else, the product is fake.
Cosmetics and skincare: Check for the BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards) mark, manufacturing date, batch number, and the manufacturer's address. Scan the barcode with apps like Open Food Facts. Genuine Nykaa, Lakme, and Mamaearth products all have verifiable batch numbers.
Clothing: Check stitching quality, label fonts, and packaging. Branded clothing has consistent sizing labels, care instructions in multiple languages, and specific tag designs. Compare with the brand's official store images.
Safe Buying Practices
- Buy from "Fulfilled by Amazon" or "Flipkart Assured" listings — these are warehoused and quality-checked by the platform
- Use brand official stores — Amazon Brand Store, Flipkart Brand Mall, and Myntra's verified brand pages
- Pay with credit card — chargebacks are easier than UPI refund disputes
- Document everything — Take an unboxing video for every high-value purchase as evidence for disputes
What to Do If You Get a Fake
File a complaint on the platform immediately with photo evidence. If the platform does not resolve it within 7 days, escalate to the National Consumer Helpline (1800-11-4000) or file a complaint on consumerhelpline.gov.in. For amounts above Rs 5,000, consider filing with the Consumer Forum — the process is free and does not require a lawyer.
Stay vigilant. A few minutes of verification can save you thousands of rupees and protect your health.
